2019 Aerial Imagery

Statewide, 6 inch, 4 band, tidal coordinated orthoimagery was collected for Connecticut in the spring of 2019. The joint Connecticut-Massachusetts project was managed by the United States Geologic Survey (USGS) and the Connecticut Office of Policy and Management (OPM). The Connecticut portion is funded with contributions from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT), the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).

The Facts

  • 23,381 tiles covering Connecticut. Each tile is 2500ft on a side or 0.224 sq miles, 143.5 acres and 6,250,000 sq feet.
  • each GeoTIFF tile is about 195MB for a total of about 4.3TB for the entire dataset
  • 169 MrSID town mosaics ranging in size from 600MB to almost 6GB for a total of 408GB.
  • 4 bands (red, green, blue, near-infrared)
  • 6 inch pixels
  • CT State Plane NAD 83 (2011) Feet projection
  • Captured between March 24, 2019 and and April 25, 2019
  • Tide coordinated

Timeline

  • Summer 2019: imagery capture completed
  • Fall 2019: imagery through QA/QC process
  • December 2019: drives sent from the contractor, Quantum Spatial, to USGS to be sent to CT
  • Jan 2019 - Image service published on CT ECO. More to follow on the website.
  • Spring 2019 - imagery website and download on CT ECO

Project Information

The joint Connecticut-Massachusetts project was managed by the United States Geologic Survey (USGS) and the contractor who did data collection and processing was Quantum Spatial.

The Connecticut portion is funded with contributions from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT), the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).

The flight oversight committee consists of members from the Office of Policy and Management (OPM), DOT, DESPP, DEEP, Capitol Region Council of Governments (CRCOG), Metropolitan Council of Government (MetroCOG) and the University of Connecticut (UConn).
